Have you ever held back or bottled up your emotions for fear of what others would say?
Have you felt afraid or uncertain about speaking up for yourself, but just kept quiet?
Do you unconsciously medicate your feelings with sugar, sweets or other foods and drink?
Emotional Repression and Suppression
Many sensitive people try and repress or suppress their true feelings as adults because they learnt that it was unsafe to express themselves as children. I am a sensitive person myself and spent a lot of my earlier years holding myself back.
This holding back is often the root cause of much unhappiness, frustration and even illness.
In my one-to-one healing work, the clients that seek me out tend to be highly creative, intuitive and sensitive beings (though they may not be aware of these amazing gifts).
Much of the work that I do with them is to help them move stuck energy (most of which has been stuck for a long time) and express themselves in a more powerful, positive and healthy way.
So, What Are Emotions?
The key thing to understand is that your emotions are energy. And this energy likes ‘motion’ - it likes to flow!
Think of your emotions as a river. If the water in a river gets blocked, the river stops flowing. Your life is like that too. When your emotions are repressed, they get trapped inside your body and inhibit your life force energy from flowing freely.
Sure-fire signs of stuck emotions include: emotional eating, lingering weight problems, addictions, fears, phobias and ongoing frustrations.
In this article, I share 8 of my favorite healing tools that you can try out for yourself so you can restore your natural flow.
Healing Tool #1 - Your Breath
Put your left hand over your heart and right hand on your belly. Breathe all the way into your solar plexus, pause, then take a long, slow deep breathe all the way out, consciously exhaling all of the air in your lungs.
Repeat this process for a minute or two and notice any feelings and sensations that arise. Keep breathing until you feel your energy start to shift naturally.
Healing Tool #2 - Journal Writing
Creative writing in a journal or diary is a fantastic way to connect with your true feelings.
Allow yourself the freedom to write in an uncensored way. When words are written down on paper, it gives you a chance to see the situation and yourself in a different perspective. This is healing in itself, and may also help you to figure out a way to do things differently.
Once you have awareness of your emotions, it becomes much easier to express them.
I liken this process to gently ‘turning on the tap’. When you have an old tap, the first time you turn on the tap, the water might be pretty rusty, even dirty. But, let the water keep flowing and eventually it will run clear again.
Healing Tool #3 - Movement
I love to move my body in fun ways. When I was younger, I was never one for team sports or running but today, I have discovered that there are lots of fun and gentle ways to move my body.
Some of my favorite ways to move include walking by the sea, doing jumping jacks, skipping, improvisation and going on yoga retreats.
Healing Tool #4 - Let Your Inner Artist Play
You certainly don’t have to be a good artist to let your inner artist express how they feel! I have found that my inner artist, always wants to play.
One way to start exploring your own inner artist, is to grab a big piece of paper and draw a picture of how you feel. Gather a selection of colored pencils, felt tips pens and brightly colored markers.
Have fun with the process and when you feel complete, give your picture a title, then date and sign it.
Using this tool will help you to move your energy and access your natural creative flow.
Healing Tool #5 - Emotional Freedom Technique
Another great healing tool is ‘tapping’ (also called, ‘Emotional Freedom Technique’). This powerful, but gentle self-healing practice is a fast and fun way to identify and release stuck energy held within the body.
If you are new to EFT, it might be worth seeking out a practitioner that can help support and guide you through the process.
Healing Tool #6 - Flower Remedies
Flower remedies are an amazing healing tool and are a perfect stress-buster. They are easy to use, very gentle but super powerful.
When you are feeling stressed or overwhelmed place a few drops of ‘Rescue Remedy’ directly under your tongue. Repeat as many times as you need until you feel better.
Healing Tool #7 - Accepting the Gift of Being Sensitive
Look for the gift hidden within your feelings and your sensitive nature. Ask yourself deeper questions. What is your current challenge or stressor offering you? If it could speak, what would it say to you?
There is a valid reason why you are feeling the way that you are. Connect with your feelings and see if you can find out what they are guiding you to do. Perhaps they are showing you that it is time to speak up for yourself and express what you truly believe.
Healing Tool #8 - Clearing Clutter
A great way to move stuck energy is to clear clutter that might be in your life.
To get started begin by tidying away things in your personal environment: your handbag, your bedroom, your office and your car. Start small and as you release the old energy, you will get inspired to tackle the bigger places such as the attic and the garage.
Look at all the things you own and give yourself permission to let go of all the things that you no longer use or need.
As you energetically release the things that you no longer resonate with, you create space in your life for new opportunities to emerge.
Express Your Feelings to Live a Powerful Life
If you want to live a powerful life, is important to learn how to express your emotions rather than repressing and suppressing them.
As you try out these gentle healing tools for yourself, know that you are taking important steps to expressing your feelings in a natural and positive way.
Sharing is caring.
