Do you feel as though you haven’t been eating as well as you would like? Have you fallen out of sync with your desired exercise routine? Do you find that even thinking about doing good things for yourself makes you feel exhausted?
If you said yes to any of these questions, realize that you are not alone… Every week I receive emails from people from all around the world who want to start feeling better about their health and their lives…
Here are a couple of emails that I received this week… Can you see yourself in either of them?
This email comes from South Africa and reads…
“Dear Katrina, I've been so up and down lately that I still feel lost and like there is no solution. I was going to do the Grape Cure diet - today... but then you popped in my mind with your balanced lifestyle and I stopped in my tracks.
I've picked up so much weight and I feel so yuk! Also, I just can't seem to move forward with my life... be it music / yoga / diet / relationships / spiritual / finances - it seems that every level of my life is upside-down!”
And here’s another one from New Zealand…
“Hi Katrina, sorry I haven't been in touch. Just feeling a bit flat at the moment and seem to have fallen back off the healthy eating wagon (no green smoothies etc) and isn't it awful but I find I tend to avoid making contact with people when feeling that way…”
Firstly, it’s natural to fall off the health wagon.
When life gets busy, (as it does for all of us) it’s totally natural to fall off the health wagon. The important thing to remember is that you can always get back on it.
Here are 3 ideas to help you pick yourself up so you can start feeling good again!
1. The path to health is not a straight line.
The path to health is never going to be a perfectly straight line. Think of it more like a journey along a country road filled with many bends and turns.
As you travel along the road, pay special attention to the changing landscape, observing the scenery with curiosity as you go.
As you journey along, be gentle with yourself and flexible in your outlook, particularly if you have perfectionist tendencies. Remember that long term success comes from progress not perfection.
2. Make health your number 1 value.
Personal development teacher of human potential, Dr John Demartini says that “humans are always loyal to their top values.”
It is your top values that dictate your current priorities. If you want to transform your health, it’s important to make health your number 1 value.
Sometimes in life it may not be possible to make health your number 1 value, even though you would like it to be. Perhaps you’ve just had a baby, started a new job or even a new relationship.
If you find yourself in this situation just accept where you are today. Do the best that you can given your circumstances and set your intention to pay more attention to your health when things become more settled for you.
3. Pay attention to the healthy, nourishing things that you are doing.
How you perceive the world is never a true reflection of how it is but merely a mirror of what you are paying attention to.
If you want to shift your reality, change your focus. Instead of lamenting on eating that extra cookie or not going for a run, choose to place your attention on the positive, healthy and nourishing things you are doing.
If you think you aren’t doing anything healthy for your body, just pay attention to your next breath. Slow your inhalation all the way down and notice the oxygen filling your lungs and purifying your blood stream.
Allow yourself to feel good with each breath that you take. Once you’ve managed to do that, look for other evidence to support you in improving your health.
Consciously choose to feel healthy right now.
Let the times that you fall off the health wagon be your invitation to reset. Allow yourself to come back to centre and create inner balance. Know that you can always get back on track by taking a nice, long inhalation and slow exhalation.
Just know that it is possible to feel healthier today by simply doing 1 small healthy action, a baby step towards feeling good. Be kind and gentle to yourself and, remember that Rome wasn't built in a day.
Remember to enjoy all the different aspects of your health journey by focusig your energy on doing the best you can in each given moment and taking care to pay special attention to all the healthy things you are already doing. With this approach, you let go of suffering and give yourself the chance to get back on track with moving in the direction of your health goals with ease and grace.
