Have you ever dreamed of doing something in your life but stopped because you felt afraid, hesitant or fearful?

Living a life filled with fear can lead to a frustrating life, feeling stuck and unable to move forward. I know because this is how I used to live my own life.

My journal was filled with big ideas, creative outpourings and secret desires to make a difference in the world. I wanted my life to be one of inspiration, one of service, where I was able to contribute and to make the lives of others better.

I wanted to be part of the solution, not the problem.

And, I was all of these things, but only in the privacy of my journal. In my diary, I wrote, I scribbled, I created and I felt fully self-expressed.

Yet, in my own life, I realized I held myself back. I was afraid to express or live my dreams. I was fearful and this fear kept me playing small.

Fear held me back from my dreams.

After a long time of struggling with procrastination and fearful thought programs, I realized that there was nothing wrong with me. I finally ‘got’ that it was only my unexamined fears that were stopping me from living the life that I internally spent my days dreaming about it.

But you don’t have to suffer like this. You can choose to live your life differently.

Here are the 5 steps that helped me move beyond the clutches of fear to today living a life on my own terms, filled with courageous, passionate and dream-filled experiences and amazing opportunities.

Step 1. Acknowledge your fear:

Fear simply wants to be recognized. Think of it like an angry child. Ignoring a child when it is having a tantrum only makes the child try to get your attention even more. This is similar to your fear. Instead of pushing it away, connect to your fear. Listen to what your fear has to say. Make friends with it. Treat it like an upset child.. Acknowledge it. Ask your fear to express itself.

Step 2. Connect with your courage:

Become friends with your courage. It lives inside your body, so begin by asking yourself where your courage lives. Maybe yours lives in in your chest, your heart, your solar plexus or your centre. What is your courage asking you to do? Speak your truth, express your creativity, be true to yourself, follow your dreams? Listen to it.

Step 3. Visualise your courage:

Fill your mind with your past successes and memories that make you feel good. Recall the times that you took a risk and things worked out. Remember when you were successful at trying things that you weren’t sure about. Encourage yourself and strengthen your belief in yourself. See yourself being successful at what you want to do.

Step 4. Affirm your courage.

Say courageous things to yourself. Fill your mind, your body and your life with empowering and courageous thoughts. Affirm that you can do what you want to do and you have (or will find) the necessary resources when you need them.

Step 5: Just do it! Don’t wait for the time to be perfect, the stars to align or someone else’s permission to move forward in your life. Take baby steps today. Remind yourself that the journey of 1000 miles always starts with the first step.

If you have a burning desire to do something, then listen to the murmurings of your heart and trust that now is the time to take action.

Make your courage bigger than your fear.

Today, I encourage you to make your courage bigger than your fear and choose to move beyond it, so that you can live the life of your dreams.
